Eliot Pan / Photographer
As a portrait photographer with a passion for capturing the human essence, Eliot Pan blends artistic concepts with commercial value in his studio works. He primarily uses digital cameras, printing his images first with digital negatives, then combining them with gelatin silver prints or alternative photographic processes. Eliot believes an image is truly complete only when printed as a physical photograph.
Eliot holds a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Management from Northumbria University, UK, where he graduated with distinction, and pursued doctoral studies in Business Administration at National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan. Before his photography career, he was a meticulous arts administrator specializing in brand development and marketing strategies, holding significant positions at organizations such as the Münchner Philharmoniker, Taiwan Philharmonic, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts and the 2010 Shanghai EXPO. During his tenure, he collaborated with renowned artists like the late Maestro Lorin Maazel and Oscar-winning composer Maestro Tan Dun.
Despite being an emerging photographer, Eliot's extensive background in classical music and diverse work experience provide a solid foundation for his photographic endeavors. His acute sensitivity to people imbues his portraits with a quiet and warm quality.
Currently, Eliot operates his own studio in Taipei, where he continues his creative work and accepts commercial portrait commissions. He is also a core member of Kuangyin Arts Co., a renowned darkroom studio in Taiwan.
"Mono Yoga," his debut photography series, marks his first public exhibition, featuring his wife, a yoga therapist. The desire to photograph his wife was the primary reason he began learning photography.

“Mono Yoga”
この創作はある出来事からインスピレーションを受けた。当時は小さな火種でしたが、後に私たちが想像もしなかった程度まで拡大し、野火が燎原した。
Covid-19。
2020 年、私はバンクーバー空港から離陸し、台湾に帰る準備をしていた。
空港は薄暗く、まるで空虚な町のようで、その後の光景も、昔に映画でしか見たことがなかった。
人々はさまざまな防護服を身に着け、マスク、フェイスシールドなどを着て搭乗の列に並んでいた。飛行中、ほとんどの人が食事もなく、トイレにも行かなかった。
この光景を見て、何かを疑い、心配さえし始めた。 彼らは息をしているのか?
台湾に安全に戻った後、「Mono Yoga」という創作が自然とわき起こった。
長きにわたる疫病大流行の中で、私たちが必要として いるものは非常に単純なことだと気づいた。
「ちゃんと呼吸すること」である。
私は撮影を媒体として用いるクリエイターである。医療従事者のように一線で人々を支援することができないが、自らの微力を尽くし、社会的責任を果たしたいと思っている。
「Mono Yoga」シリーズの創作では、単純な信念を伝えようとしている。「ちゃんと呼吸することで、未来があり、希望が生ま れる。」(もちろん、マスクを着けないほうがより良い!)
撮影では、シンプルな光、単純な線、純粋な無彩色を選び、観客に自らの美学と気持ちを伝える。
もし本当にこの作品について何か言いたいことがあるなら、「Mono Yoga」の創作過程で、突然に、100 年以上の歴史のある「写真」という技術 を使用し、千年の歴史を持つヨガと共に歩んでいることに気づいた。デジタルカメラ(DSLR)で撮影し、デジタル画像を暗室で 銀塩写真(gelatin silver prints)として現像し、最終的な展示形式としている。
これが私に与えられたカメラマンの使命だと思っている。

この度、ルーニィでは初めて、台湾の作家・Eliot Panさんを紹介します。
作品における視点は、それぞれの経験の中で生まれるものです。コロナ禍については、世界中の人が共通の体験として数年を過ごしました。（すでにルーニィで紹介した初沢亜利さんの「東京コロナ禍」のような作品も記憶に新しいと思います）
彼が感じたのは「息をすること」
マスクが手放せない生活の中、身体的にも精神的にも息苦しい３年間を思い出します。
Eliotさんの作品は、デジタルネガを起こし、アナログな暗室での現像を経て作られています。繊細なグレーの諧調は、見えない粒子のような空気感を醸し出し、ヨガのポーズとともに深く、見るものを穏やかな呼吸を思い出させます。
本展では、台湾からEliotさんを始め、光影手工暗房工作室の皆さんもきてくださり、交流の時間を作る予定です。
