中原中也の詩に出会ったのは、14歳の頃だった。

以来、「曇天」は、その世界と音律が丸ごと、私の臓腑にとり憑いた。

中也が慄いた、曇天の黒い旗。

音もなく、高く、はためくばかりで、手繰り下すことのかなわぬ黒い旗。

私はその「曇天的ななにか」を残したいと、これまで写真を続けてきたのかもしれない。

古典技法との出会いは、撮影された被写体から、何かを削ぎ落とし、隠し、写真のもつ明瞭さや具象性を溶き流した。

その過程で、印画紙に留まったものが、「曇天」の残像である。

It was at the age of fourteen, when I first encountered the poetry of Chuya Nakahara*.

I was possessed by “Donten”, its word and the rhythm, deeply inside.

Chuya trembled in fear, the black flag in the cloudy sky.

The black flag silently flaps up high, out of reach of anyone to pull it down.

Through my journey in photography, I may have struggled to express something like “Donten” on paper.

The classical process scraped off and covered up things belonging to the subject matter, melting away the clarity and concreteness of photographs.

What remained on the silver print paper is the afterimage of “Donten”.
